Roger Ebert is following the ranks of Jack Thompson in criticizing the game industry and getting gamers up in a tizzy. He flat out stated that games aren’t art and will never be. And while we think that Ebert is entitled to his opinion, no matter how wrong it is, we want to present an idea on what art is.
Anyone who takes an art history class is constantly barraged with the question “What is art?”. Each new art movement is book ended with this question, mostly in response to a change in what people think art entails. Of course, there is no correct answer.
The closest consensus to an answer to this question is art is what you say it is. Art is in the eye of the beholder. If you believe it is art, then it is. Of course, if you don’t believe it is art, then it isn’t. People may disagree with you but they can’t be wrong and neither can you.
So we ask you.
If this is art,
why isn’t this?
If this is art,
why isn’t this?
If this is art,
why isn’t this?
Don’t listen to Roger Ebert, you don’t care what he says. Would you ask your Aunt Linda for advice on what motorcycle to buy? No. Aunt Linda doesn’t appreciate motorcycles like you do and has no understanding of what they are. Just like Roger Ebert has no understanding of what games are. Listen to someone who knows.
Everyone knows that tragedies make for good stories. The fall of Reach is a well known event in the Halo Universe. Lucky for us, we get to experience it first hand. The next Halo game details this tragic event and we have a new trailer for the campaign for you. Check it out! By the way, it’s in HD so you can blow that mother up!
I grew up playing 16 bit RPGs on my family’s Super Nintendo. In fact, I will argue to my death that the role playing games from the 16 bit era, more specifically from Square, are the greatest games ever made. I traveled time in Chrono Trigger and destroyed the world in Final Fantasy 3 (6) but I never got the chance to play Earthbound aka Mother 2 for the SNES. I had heard of it but it was rare in my town and no one I knew growing up had it to borrow from. Now, almost exactly 15 years later, I have taken it upon me to try this game out finally. So, I found a copy of the game online and bought it (don’t tell my wife) and now I’m working through it.
First of all, I love the art style. I have a special place in my heart for pixel art and animations and this game satisfies like BBQ during the summer. Its a bright colorful depiction of Americana. The music is also fantastic and really helps sell the presentation.
So far, I’m about to leave the first town. I just took down the first boss and got my first sanctuary. The story is your standard save the world adventure tale.
The gameplay is standard turn based RPG with weapon attacks and spells. Nothing worth noting but where the game really shines is its sense of humor. The game is just down right quirky. It’s got a clever sense of humor and have the fun in playing is talking to townsfolk and hearing what they have to say. This is not your typical RPG.
So far, I love the modern setting with the sci-fi theme. This was sorely lacking in my youth and I’m pretty happy with the game thus far. Stay tuned for more adventures!
With the announcement that Street Fighter X Tekken will not be hitting our digital shores until 2012, Das Reviews is here to portend disaster.
The Mayan prediction of the end of the world (or some marketing idiot’s interpretation of the end of the Mayan calendar) has the year 2012 on the world’s mind. According to this ancient tribe of people, the world will end in disaster, either via sun flares ala Roland Emmerich or via electing a lipsticked pitbull in a power suit to the world’s most powerful political position.
But Das Reviews portends another cause: the marriage of the two biggest fighting franchises in the world in not one but two games. The mere presence of the games themselves will not be the cause but they will be the catalyst.
The makers are taking the Versus concept to an absurd level. Not only will fanboys fight over will game universe is better but they will fight over which company’s iteration of the game universes is better. It’s going to be Street Fighter vs Tekken VS Tekken vs Street Fighter, an acronym disaster just waiting to happen. The world’s Shift Keys can’t handle SFXTVTXSF.
The apocalypse will start when a Street Fighter fanboy argues that SFXT is a better game but upon realizing that he just including the word Tekken in a statement that looked favorably on it, a small vacuum will appear in his mind. This will compound as he tries to defend his statement. Unfortunately, he will not be the only one. If he were, the world would be able to fend off this disaster. But no, there will be others. Fanboys around the world will create mini vacuums in their minds from their contradictions and the effects will compound.
The collective vacuum will reach a threshold where it will start to affect weaker minds around them including but not limited to Twilight fans, rednecks and vegetarians. The vacuum will grow exponentially once it hits this threshold and a black hole will appear on Earth, sucking the world and all surrounding planetary bodies into an alternate dimension where all of the lost socks in history end up.
Someone has to stop them and I hear John Cusack is busy. Are you up for it?
Which is going to be your favorite? SFXT or TXSF? Hit your caps lock key and reply below!
Check out this video of the first gameplay footage from Comic Con 2010 of Street Fighter X Tekken. The crowd utterly freaks out when Chun Li tags in. I swear someone needs to change their pants. The game is expected to release in 2012. Wait, isn’t the world supposed to end in 2012? Is the fanboy’s ultimate wet dream crossover game going to spell disaster for the human race?
We don’t care, just as long as it has network play!

Yes, first it was Sonic the Hedgehog sleeping with Mario, then it was RPG Companies fighting the good fight with action/arcade guys (Namco Bandai) and as history and the internet brings one big jumbled melting pot of technological insanity the past inconceivable has been done!
This is Street Fighter VS Tekken. I mean you really can call it a ton of things. Capcom has called it Street Fighter X Tekken for I guess not to seem like they are “versing the world” (can I say that..lol) but it seems that it’s already in production and there’s not a thing you can do about it!
So for those looking to sleep with your sisters, here it is:
The Street Fighter Versus Tekken or SF Vs Tekken, or Street Fighter VS Tekken..take your pick
At Press Time, Yoshinori Ono said that the game will available on BOTH the XBOX 360 and PS3! (I guess he didn’t want to get murdered on stage if that was less than the case!) so fanboys be not hesitant to heavily scrutinize the game because it will be a 2D style fighter just like Super Street Fighter 4.
…wait (I hear small sobs from Tekken enthusiasts!) there is more.
It just so happens that this cross-over will be a little more than just “another licensing” cash cleanup but instead it was announced that Tekken X Street Fighter is also in development at Namco! So I imagine this will version of the title will be more geared towards the Tekken stylized gameplay and graphics.
