I’m Playing Earthbound for the First Time Ever – Part 1

Earthbound 300x196 Im Playing Earthbound for the First Time Ever Part 1

I grew up playing 16 bit RPGs on my family’s Super Nintendo. In fact, I will argue to my death that the role playing games from the 16 bit era, more specifically from Square, are the greatest games ever made. I traveled time in Chrono Trigger and destroyed the world in Final Fantasy 3 (6) but I never got the chance to play Earthbound aka Mother 2 for the SNES. I had heard of it but it was rare in my town and no one I knew growing up had it to borrow from. Now, almost exactly 15 years later, I have taken it upon me to try this game out finally. So, I found a copy of the game online and bought it (don’t tell my wife) and now I’m working through it.

earthbound 1 Im Playing Earthbound for the First Time Ever Part 1

First of all, I love the art style. I have a special place in my heart for pixel art and animations and this game satisfies like BBQ during the summer. Its a bright colorful depiction of Americana. The music is also fantastic and really helps sell the presentation.

So far, I’m about to leave the first town. I just took down the first boss and got my first sanctuary. The story is your standard save the world adventure tale.

earthbound 5 Im Playing Earthbound for the First Time Ever Part 1

The gameplay is standard turn based RPG with weapon attacks and spells. Nothing worth noting but where the game really shines is its sense of humor. The game is just down right quirky. It’s got a clever sense of humor and have the fun in playing is talking to townsfolk and hearing what they have to say. This is not your typical RPG.

earthbound 3 Im Playing Earthbound for the First Time Ever Part 1

So far, I love the modern setting with the sci-fi theme. This was sorely lacking in my youth and I’m pretty happy with the game thus far. Stay tuned for more adventures!

It’s Official! : Street Fighter Versus Tekken & Tekken VS Street Fighter – Trailer Inside

Saturday, July 24th, 2010

Oh it’s a joyous day!

Street Fighter vs Tekken

Street Fighter Versus Tekken

Yes, first it was Sonic the Hedgehog sleeping with Mario, then it was RPG Companies fighting the good fight with action/arcade guys (Namco Bandai) and as history and the internet brings one big jumbled melting pot of technological insanity the past inconceivable has been done!

This is Street Fighter VS Tekken. I mean you really can call it a ton of things. Capcom has called it Street Fighter X Tekken for I guess not to seem like they are “versing the world” (can I say that..lol) but it seems that it’s already in production and there’s not a thing you can do about it!

So for those looking to sleep with your sisters, here it is:

The Street Fighter Versus Tekken or SF Vs Tekken, or Street Fighter VS Tekken..take your pick

At Press Time, Yoshinori Ono said that the game will available on BOTH the XBOX 360 and PS3! (I guess he didn’t want to get murdered on stage if that was less than the case!) so fanboys be not hesitant to heavily scrutinize the game because it will be a 2D style fighter just like Super Street Fighter 4.

…wait (I hear small sobs from Tekken enthusiasts!) there is more.

It just so happens that this cross-over will be a little more than just “another licensing” cash cleanup but instead it was announced that Tekken X Street Fighter is also in development at Namco! So I imagine this will version of the title will be more geared towards the Tekken stylized gameplay and graphics.

Okay, now wet your pants!

Power Rock Hero, aka “Are music-based games doomed to die a horrible fiery digital death?”

power rock hero music video games e3 Power Rock Hero, aka Are music based games doomed to die a horrible fiery digital death?

Checking out all the mood lighting-bathed video game madness at E3 this week has got me thinking.  It’s kind of awesome point in time for video games.  It’s definitely come into the mainstream.  Gamers (some anyway) are actually “cool” and are no longer the sun-starved anti-socialites hiding away in dark, dank basements that belong to their grandparents.  Video gaming culture in general has started to shift away from placing more value on pixel-pushing power and towards real innovation -toward evolution.  Prime example: Music Games… the guitar-based ones to be exact.

I’d say music video games have a come a long way since the days of the Miracle Piano Teaching System or Mario Paint’s composer feature.  Back then, it seemed like everyone thought of the Miracle was just gimmicky… not a viable gaming option of the hardcore.  Was that concept even around back then?  The hardcore gamer?  As we all know… RedOctane and Harmonix changed all that back in 2005 when they released the first installment of the Guitar Hero juggernaut.   Then all hell broke loose, the two split up with RedOctane becoming a property of Activision and Harmonix courting the folks at MTV games.  Harmonix ended coming out  their very awesome RockBand franchise.  The two have been trying to one up each other ever since.

That brings us to now.   When the original Guitar Hero came out, this is what the controller looked like:
guitar hero original controller Power Rock Hero, aka Are music based games doomed to die a horrible fiery digital death?

A ukulele-sized non-reasonable facsimile of an actual guitar.  With 5 fret buttons and a little plastic strum paddle, the original GH guitar controller, bore very little resemblance to its real life counterpart, in both look and style of play.

As of E3 2010, this is what the controllers look like:

power gig rock band 3 controllers Power Rock Hero, aka Are music based games doomed to die a horrible fiery digital death?

Left: Power Gig's guitar, Right: RockBand 3's guitar

Cah-razy!  What?  You say they’re pretty much real guitars!?  How astute of you, anonymous reader!  While Rock Band’s 3 guitar controller opted for 102 fret buttons with actual pluckable strings, new addition to the fray Power Gig boasts a controller that is a bonafide six-stringed fretted instrument, magnetic pickups and all.  To be fair, at E3 Harmonix also demoed a Fender Squier made for RB3, which was basically an actual Squier electric guitar with fret sensors and midi capabilities.

Tell me you Guitar Hero/RockBand aficionados haven’t had this conversation before, though.  When Rock Band introduced the drum pad and everyone realized it was a little like playing actual drums, I know more than a few of my friends joked around about how they’re going to better approximate playing actual guitar… well, there it goes.

Combine the new guitar controllers with Rock Band’s new Keytar accessory, and the lines between video game and digital guitar teaching system start to get blurred even more.

I guess my point is: once we get to the point where the games are called “How Well Do You Play Real Guitar?”, how do we evolve from there?  Will the uber-creative minds of today’s game designers find another way to push the envelope?  Or will these music games rot away in their stagnancy?  You know… like the Police Academy movies.

What say you, Gamers?

Natal Debuts New Parental Controls for Xbox 360

xbox360logo 300x168 Natal Debuts New Parental Controls for Xbox 360

Microsoft is set to show off their long awaited Project Natal for the Xbox 360. LA Times had the opportunity to try it out and reported on it. One thing they mentioned was a new parental control feature being put in place that utilizes the Natal to help them monitor what their child plays. Check it out:

Using facial recognition software, the camera checks who is playing and pulls up their personal avatars on the screen. The feature would, for example, let parents control which games their kids can play. If the console sees that the person playing is associated with a profile with parental controls, it will restrict the types of games that can be played.

Stay tuned to Das Reviews as we break more information on Project Natal!

After the resounding success of Batman Arkham Asylum, the videogame comic book adaptations coming out have a very large shadow to emerge from. Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions was in development before Arkham Asylum came out and we know that the Dark Crusader is peering over their development shoulders. Can this new game lend more credence to the comic book adaptations or will be get another ho hum game? Time will tell but these look like a good start and Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions has a unique enough concept to turn some heads.

This game takes the many aspects of the Spider-Man universe and crams them together in one webtastic videogame. In this, you play as Spider-Man from 4 different universes. Three have been revealed so far: The Amazing Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2099 and Spider-Man: Noir. We are crossing Das Fingers for Marvel Zombies Spider-Man.

New Mortal Kombat Movie in the Works? Mortal Kombat Rebirth trailer!

mortal kombat movie reboot New Mortal Kombat Movie in the Works? Mortal Kombat Rebirth trailer!

This just in gamers.  Yesterday, a big-budget, big-name promo video dropped on YouTube.  Rumors abound as to the actual source of the video, as well as it’s purpose.  Checka check it out:

Yup…  that’s Michael Jai White and Jeri Ryan, both veterans of the geekdom movie rounds.  It kinda feels like they took Mortal Kombat and slathered some Christopher Nolan all over it, doesn’t it?  It’s basically Mortal Kombat without the supernatural.  While I’m all about keeping true to the established mythos when it comes to video game movies… this reboot one may just fly with me, hopefully.

Whatever this thing is… it’s precursor to something big.  The amount of cash put into this one definitely puts it out of the realm of fanfilm.  According to IMDb, there is a Mortal Kombat Film slated for 2013, backed by Warner Bros.  The IMDb also says that they had begun casting the project at the end of 2008.   Rumors abound!  What say you, gamers?

After all, E3 is right around the corner…
