Gothic series rights back to Piranha Bytes

By on April 12, 2011

Piranha Bytes was originally behind the wheel of the Gothic series. However, the company was constantly pressed hard by their publisher, JoWood. JoWood pressed Piranha Bytes to meet the release dates of the Gothic series and as a result of this, the first parts of the franchise were full of bugs at the time of release.

Piranha Bytes decided then to develop a new RPG that would be the spiritual successor of the Gothic series. That new IP was Risen. Risen was slated to be released when it was done and the team had enough time to iron all, or at least most, of its bugs before release. JoWood on the other hand decided to assign a new development team to handle the fourth part of the Gothic series. Spellbound was called to fulfill JoWood’s vision, but failed to do so.

Risen was successful while Arcania: Gothic 4 failed to reach JoWood’s expectations. And it seems that Piranha Bytes will get back the rights of the Gothic series after the release of Risen 2. “We get the rights to Gothic back when we’ll have finished Risen 2. Why? Because we did only sell them to our ex-publisher for a certain amount of time” said Piranha Bytes’ co-founder, Mike Hoge, in his latest interview with Gothicz.net.

We seriously can’t wait to see what Piranha Bytes has to offer us with both Risen 2: Dark Waters and Gothic 5. Stay tuned for more!
