The Darkness II announced
The Darkness was one of the few FPS games I was really looking forward to. Developed by Starbreeze and announced only for PS3 and X360, I was waiting patiently for the studio to port it to my beloved platform, the PC. That port, as you may have guessed, didn’t come (in fact, I’m still waiting for a special edition or something like that. Keep dreaming, I know. Oh well). So I was quite shocked with the announcement of 2K that The Darkness II will also be released for the PC. Moreover, this sequel is being developed by Digital Extremes and not by Starbreeze. The game will be powered by the Evolution engine that was also used in Dark Sector. Quite an old engine but we’re sure it will be enhanced with new features.
“The Darkness II is a well of dark and imaginative violence, and it’s a stylized and beautiful nightmare,” said 2K boss Christoph Hartmann. “The Darkness II continues the 2K Games tradition of delivering quality, innovative games that are filled to the brim with atmosphere and deep storytelling. The game takes a unique stance on fighting in the dark versus light. Combined with the arsenal of weapons at Jackie’s disposal and the gruesome attacks of the supernatural Demon Arms and Darkness powers, we’re proud to announce another title that delivers on our core values of creating games for gamers.”
Digital Extremes is well known for its involvement in Bioshock 2. However, you may not recall that the same company was responsible for the single player version of our beloved, Unreal. Sadly, the biggest involvement of this studio was with the Unreal series, as almost each and every other game is considered a low budget one. Warpath, Pariah, Dark Sector… all had great ideas and all shared the same fate. We can only hope that the budget for The Darkness II will be higher. The Darkness II will be released on autumn 2011 for PS3, X360 and PC!
